Mario Hoops Fanart
30th April 2022So does anyone remember Mario Hoops 3 on 3 for the DS?
Dunno why I thought about this game, it might be due to the new Mario Strikers game and it unlocked a hidden childhood memory. The art style, the music, everything about this game was superb! Enix knew what they were doing!
In the EU the game was known as “Mario Slam Basketball” but I opted to make the US logos as they are more well known (and personally I think it sounds catchier)
This art is another example of me creating the background first before the character doodles and logos. I’ve been really into creating BGs as of late and I should really focus this energy on designing backgrounds to start designing some UI stuff so I start building up a solid portfolio but I know myself too well and the likely hood of that happening is slim.
I think deep down though this is an excuse to make more Daisy fanart as I feel like it’s been a while since I’ve drawn her. I was thinking what if Daisy tied her hair back like how Peach does whenever she’s competing in sports? Even though Dasiy is forever locked in Spinoff hell, I think it would look nice if they shook up her design even if it’s just a little.
I even drew inspiration from other basketball media such as real-world basketball players and of course the magnum opus of animated basketball movies: SpaceJam. (Lola Bunny was one of the biggest inspirations for this Dasiy design)
It felt good colouring in Dasiy as I’ve primarily been shading stuff in a cel-shaded style or with Vectors, I haven’t painted a sketch like this in a while. It’s good to know I haven’t forgotten how to shade my work more traditionally.
I was planning on animating Dasiy and using the doodles designs as a base for her design, but I just never got around to it. I might revisit it at a later point in time, I’m currently focused on one of my old characters right now so you’ll probably be seeing her next. 👀
