Sketchdump #008

Salutations! It’s been a while since the last sketch dump. I’ve been busy with quite a few things, some not ideal and some very ideal. Long story short, I’ve just been busy, so here’s the backlog.

MISTER ACXION’s Volatile Vince Concepts

One of my first GameMaker projects is an updated version of Volatile Vince. It’s a throwaway game built to teach myself the engine, since its coding language is quite different to GDevelop’s.

My good friend MISTER ACXION! made some concept sketches for Vince, and I really appreciate it. He looks super cute. I think MISTER ACXION! sees Vince as cute, whereas I’ve always read him as annoyed or angry.

Princess Daisy Shape Vectors

I wanted to test a quick animation using a mix of Moho and GDevelop, mostly to see how well the exporting would hold up. I didn’t want to sketch anything out or get too detailed, so I opened Affinity Designer and built a scrappy silhouette of Daisy from basic vector shapes.

The original plan was a commission where you’d order a character from me, I’d animate it in three different states, download it to your phone, and your character would then be interactable on your Android device. I wanted to push past static art into something that moves and responds.

Exporting from Moho to GDevelop is a bit clunky because the axis gets mixed up. I fulfilled the test anyway, but I don’t think I’ll be revisiting the idea. I do still owe you guys Daisy in her Mario Kart World swimwear ๐Ÿ˜‰

Dino Getcha Shape Vector Concepts

Ironically, the Daisy vectors made me realise I might have stumbled onto a really solid way to experiment with shape language. It’s also great for testing colour palettes without sketching a whole character. These shapes are quick to make, and they’ve helped me strengthen the designs for both Kelly and A.K.I.I as I finalise them for Dino Getcha.

Poko Sketch

One of my mutuals recommended I watch Piki and Poko, an early internet Adobe Flash animated series. I’m surprised how ahead of its time it was. To my knowledge, it’s late ’90s, yet the aesthetics were well ahead of the curve. It’s very Y2K-centric.

I’m also noticing that my friend and I have very similar taste in characters, and we both got drawn to Poko’s design. They drew her, so I felt obligated to draw her too.

Rivet & Kit Sketch

This was meant to be for a video about the state of the industry, focused on PlayStation. I’m still very grateful that PlayStation commissioned me to make a Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart art piece. To this day it’s one of my favourite commissions, and it gave me a taste for wanting to be in the industry.

The video’s argument was that it’s better to be an indie game developer. I still kind of believe that, but my takes are slightly outdated now thanks to, well, many different variables. I’d love to revisit it at some point. I never made the video, so the sketch stayed unfinished too. It’s meant to be a parody of the PAL box art from the original 2002 Ratchet & Clank.

Betilla Sketch

I find it hilarious that Betilla gets a different design in every new Rayman game. It feels like an inside joke at Ubisoft, like they’re now obligated to redesign her every time. People are mixed on the design: A lot of the complaints say she looks too basic, since plenty of Rayman creatures look otherworldly and she looks pretty tame. I get that, but I still think she’s cute and I just wanted to draw her.

Selene Commission by RAMRAT

I created Selene a while back and didn’t know what to do with her. Funnily enough, I still don’t. I wanted to help out a mutual online, and they had commissions open; their art style felt perfect for her. Fun fact: this is the first recorded instance of her name. I’ve always wanted her to be Selene.

I’m still stuck between two designs. One of my friends thought she was a twin, and I’m tempted to split her into two characters, but I haven’t decided yet.

She’s a lot more adult-looking than most of my other characters that I draw, and I kind of like that. Normally I give my characters a backstory and a reason to exist, but with Selene I just wanted a more mature-looking character. Maybe that’s her purpose. I do want to do more of her. On a related note, I’d like to have a more mature, sexier-looking character in Dino Getcha.

Conclusion

I’ll keep this short. I’m planning changes to my websites and how I present myself online, mainly because of how AI is changing the way I look at my footprint online. So keep an eye out for that post.

Which of these sketches would you want to see turned into a finished piece? If you want to support more of this, you can back me on Ko-fi or browse the store! I’ll catch you guys later!
